Hyderabad: After a rap from the Centre, the State government seems to have woken up from slumber and decided to implement the guidelines on regulating coaching institutions in the State.

In view of growing suicide cases and poor facilities in the coaching institutions, the Centre had rolled out guidelines to regulate private coaching centres across the country in January.

Nine months after the centre notified the guidelines, the State cabinet sub-committee that recently met under the leadership of ministers D Sridhar Babu and D Anasuya alias Seethakka decided on implementing the guidelines for regulating coaching centres offering training for JEE, NEET and TG EAPCET among other competitive examinations.

“The Central government is serious about non-implementation of its guidelines to regulate coaching centres. In this context, the cabinet sub-committee decided to implement the guidelines and take action against coaching centres for not following the guidelines in the State,” said a press release from the sub-committee.

As per the guidelines, institutions offering coaching classes are barred from enrolling students below 16 years of age and from charging exorbitant fees. Coaching should not be more than five hours a day and it should not be held early in the morning or too late in the evening.

Coaching centres should register with competent authority within a period of three months from date of implementation of guidelines and engage tutors having qualifications not less than graduation.

As per guidelines, the institutions should not make misleading promises or guarantee of rank or good marks and must apprise students about the difficulty of exams, syllabus, level of intensity of preparation and efforts required from them.

The curriculum/class timetable should be suitably spaced out to allow the students to relax and recuperate and weekly off should be ensured for students as well as tutors.
