Hyderabad: With cyber fraudsters cheating their gullible victims posing as Mumbai Police, CBI, and other central government officials, the Cyberabad police have issued an advisory as a proactive measure. In this crime, victims receive internet calls from an unknown number or a direct call from abroad.

The caller claimed to be from the customs department and informed the victims that a parcel from Mumbai to Taiwan or another country was seized because it contained illegal drugs, passports, SIM cards mobile devices etc.

According to the police, cyber fraudsters threaten citizens by making false accusations, claiming that parcels initiated using the victim’s identity card contained drugs.

“They impersonate police personnel, forge government agency, and forward them to victims threaten to register a case for drug dealing or money laundering,” cybercrime officials said.

In some instances, the fraudsters demand victims to furnish bank account statements and credentials to verify financial transactions. The fraudsters make the victims transfer the amount to verify the source of money.

Victims, believing them to be genuine officers, transfer the whole amounts available in their accounts, only to realise some time later that they have been defrauded.
