Hyderabad: The future of nearly 8, 000 PG medical aspirants from Telangana State, who had appeared for the PG NEET-2024 in August, hangs in balance, as the State government and the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) are yet to hold at least one round of counselling for admission into PG medical seats in private and government medical colleges.

The PG NEET-2024 examination was held in August and at the national level, already two-rounds of counselling have been completed. And yet, the State government and KNRUHS are yet to issue notification to conduct even the first phase of the PG counselling.

Local students, who are born in Telangana State and have qualified in the PG-NEET 2024 but chose to skip the national level PG counselling, in the hope of getting a PG medical seat here by attending the local counselling, are now facing a prospect of losing the seats to their counterparts from other parts of the country.

“The NEET is about to complete its third round of counselling for admissions into PG medical seats by Christmas or New Year. However, not a single round of counselling has been done in Telangana. There is every possibility that students from other parts of India would get allocated to PG seats in Telangana. A few medical colleges have also started their PG academic classes from December 20. We are suffering because of the delay in holding the counselling,” members of Telangana Local PG Students Association said.

Trouble started when the present Congress government released GO Ms 148 and 149 relating to ‘local status’ of candidates for admissions into PG medical courses. However, a few days ago, following writ petitions filed by affected students, the High Court struck down the Government Orders.

“Despite clear cut instructions, the State government or KNRUHS are not conducting PG NEET counselling. I was born in Nalgonda and as a local Telangana doctor, I must be considered as a local candidate. We are just waiting for KNRUHS to issue notification to conduct counselling,” a candidate who qualified PG NEET said.
