Hyderabad: National Independent Schools Alliance (NISA) and Telangana Recognised School Managements Association (TRSMA) have urged the Central and State governments to grant an ex-gratia of Rs.10 lakh to private budget schools’ correspondents and teachers who died by suicide over financial crisis due to closure of schools in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, NISA president Dr. Kulbhushan Sharma said 15 to 20 school correspondents and teachers across the country including one in Telangana and two in Andhra Pradesh have died by suicide due to financial issues in the pandemic.

He said education should be placed under the essential services so that students would not lose on their academics. He questioned as to why the private budget schools were taxed under commercial slab when they were giving services in a not-for-profit way.

TRSMA president Yadagiri Shekhar Rao said there were 30 per cent school fee defaulters during the academic year 2019-20 and only 10 per cent fees had been collected in 2020-21 and fee collection for 2021-22 has not yet commenced by the private budget schools.

Welcoming the State government’s decision to reopen the educational institutions from September 1, Rao said the managements are ready to reopen the schools for offline classes with all Covid-19 safety measures and sought full cooperation from the government and parents for the same.

He urged the government to extend unsecured loans to the school managements with a moratorium period of one year. As the schools remained closed for 18 months, the TRSMA president wanted the government to pass instructions directing the financers not to pressure the managements for payment of the loan amount.
