Hyderabad: With the 4,000 MW Yadadri Thermal Power Station (YTPS) all set to begin operations on Saturday, marking a milestone in the State’s journey toward energy independence, BRS working president KT Rama Rao termed the project a testament to party president and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s visionary leadership and determination.

In a statement, Rama Rao credited Chandrashekhar Rao’s foresight for transforming Telangana from a State plagued by power shortages into one capable of delivering uninterrupted electricity to all sectors. “YTPS is another indelible signature of Chandrashekhar Rao on the history of Telangana. Chandrashekhar Rao’s vision and efforts behind this power plant will be remembered for a long time by the people of Telangana,” he said.

With a total capacity of 4,000 MW (5×800 MW), YTPS is the largest thermal power plant operated by a State government in independent India. The project construction was awarded to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) at a cost of Rs.20,400 crore, the largest order ever given to a public sector undertaking in the history of the Indian power sector.

The BRS working president said with the commissioning of YTPS, the installed power capacity of Telangana which was only 7,778 MW in 2014, grew to nearly 20,000 MW within a decade.

“This success story is unparalleled in the country’s history,” he remarked.
